Don’t Look Back in Anger, Ole: Manchester Utd vs Manchester City (12/12/2020)

Onside View’s resident football tipster, James Robinson is casting his beady eye on the mouthwatering Manchester derby at Old Trafford. Can United rewind the clock and dominate their neighbours once more, or will it be business as usual for Pep’s boys? Either way, nobody will be painting the town red (or blue!) after this one.
It was 24th April, 2019 when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took charge of his first Manchester derby. It didn’t end well. 2nd half goals from Sane and Silva gave Pep Guardiola first blood.
Almost 2 years on (and a whole lotta Roy Keane criticism) later, Ole hasn’t fully convinced as manager of the biggest club in the world. And, with Pep struggling for consistency from his star-studded team, the question is: who will be looking back in anger after this one?
Under Pep Guardiola, Man City have won 4 out of 9 PL games against United – with 3 of those victories coming at Old Trafford. Meanwhile, Ole’s league H2H against his Spanish counterpart is impressive, winning 2 out of 3. Has Ole found the masterplan to halt Pep’s recent dominance?
United haven’t conceded at home in their last 2 PL games, whilst City have only scored 1 in their last 2 away.
Man United’s last 2 victories have seen them losing at half time, only to come out in the 2nd half like a shockwave. Cavani was instrumental in the comeback against Southampton, as was the halftime introduction of Bruno Fernandes against the Hammers. Comparatively, Man City’s last 2 victories have seen them score within 6 minutes in both. So put yer money where yer mouth is and back a complete reversal of fortunes for both Manchester sides.
With the exception of the 18/19 season, when City comfortably did the double over United, the score lines have been much tighter over recent years. However, with Ole under mounting pressure, and with no more Champions League football, he must be wondering whether he’s “outta time”. Ole simply has to prove his doubters wrong and bring it on down against City on Saturday evening. But, with Pep standing in his way, Aguero nearing match fitness, and De Bruyne back to his technical best, United surely won’t be able to contain them.
